In 1e, paladins and rangers are fighters, while in 2e, fighters, paladins, and rangers all belong to the "warrior group" (which necessitated that 2e make certain things more explicit, like outright stating that you can't dual-class or multi-class within a class group since they're all technically the same class). I'd suggest picking up the 1e PHB in PDF (or hardcover if available) and just wing it. I think as others have said 1e play at a convention will be much more about "creative problem solving" than the level of action you get from 5e.
